JOINT STATEMENT BY KWAZULU-NATAL MINISTERS OF TRANSPORT AND EDUCATION AND CULTURE ON THE FLOOD DAMAGE IN THE PROVINCE

Issued by Department of Transport

20 November 2000

KZN MECs for Transport Mr Sbu Ndebele and of Education and Culture, Ms Faith Gasa are co-ordinating emergency services to deal with the floods that have devastated roads and access to schools in parts of the province.

This is affecting the writing of matric examinations. Areas worst affected are the following.

Eshowe, Mthunzini, Hlabisa, Mahlabathini, Nongoma and Lower Umfolozi

The Departments involved include: Education, Transport, SANDF, SAPS, Health

Attempts to get army helicopters to assist students to cross where bridges have been swept away have been thwarted by mist and low clouds.

However no effort will be spared to ensure that students are able to write their examinations. Specific details about examinations and roads affected will be given by each department concerned.
