MINISTER OF TRANSPORT, DULLAH OMAR ON HIS ATTITUDE ON AMNESTY APPLICATION OF FERDI BARNARD

19 November 2000

Issued by Department of Transport

The SABC television news report yesterday (Saturday, 18 November 2000) on the attitude of Dullah Omar, the Transport Minister to the application of Ferdi Barnard is inaccurate and misleading.

Minister Dullah Omar and his wife Farida accept that Ferdi Barnard has made full disclosure of his involvement in the conspiracy to assassinate him. They have forgiven him unconditionally.

Minister Omar is fully mindful of the independence of the TRC Amnesty Committee and the entire amnesty process. As a Cabinet Minister he does not wish to tarnish the process and therefore, will not comment on whether the applicants have satisfied and met all the criteria for getting amnesty. This will be for the Amnesty Committee to decide.

Minister Omar and his family will accept the decision of the committee.
