Pretoria - the Director-General of the Department of Labour, Adv Rams Ramashia, has expressed outrage and dismay at the factory accident that took place at the ESS Chem chemical plant next to Lenasia, South of Johannesburg, in which 11 people are said to have died.
Advocate Ramashia, who last night ordered an immediate inquiry into the accident, is currently at the chemical plant leading a team of inspectors to establish amongst others the causes of the accident, compliance to safety regulations as well as whether such an accident could have been prevented.
"Though the matter is still sub judicate the Department is very concerned about reports that the company had not provide emergency escape exits which by itself is a violation of safety regulations" Adv Ramashia said.
"Employers who do not adhere to occupational health safety regulations should expect a zero tolerance approach from the Department of Labour as the Department will not tolerate any employer who does not place priority on worker safety" Adv Ramashia said.
The Director-General has indicated that should it be established that the accident was caused by any negligence on the part of the company, the Department will ensure that the perpetrators are brought to book.
Adv. Ramashia expressed his condolence to the family of the deceased some of whom he met at the scene of the accident.
