PRESIDENT MBEKI EXTENDS HIS CONDOLENCES TO HIS AUSTRIAN COUNTERPART THOMAS KLESTRIL ON THE DEATH OF 170 PEOPLE IN A FIRE AT KITZSTEINHORN SKI RESORT

Issued by: Department of Foreign Affairs

11 November 2000

It was with a great sense of regret and shock that I learned of the tragic accident at the Kitzsteinhorn ski resort to the south of Salzberg which claimed the lives of so many of your citizens as well as visitors to the country.

Please accept the heartfelt condolences of the government and people of South Africa.

We are with you in our thoughts in this time of bereavement and loss.

At least 170 people - many of them teenagers - were killed after fire swept through a funicular train carrying skiers through a tunnel in the Austrian Alps early on Saturday.
