7 November 2000
The Presidency is pleased to announce the launch of Every Child is My Child - an historic photographic exhibition documenting the lives of children across South Africa, on Friday 10 November 2000 at 13h00 at the African Window Museum. Representatives of the media are invited to attend the cocktail function.
The Office on the Rights of the Child (ORC) which is based in the Presidency and the National Program of Action (NPA), commissioned the photographs to promote and highlight the rights of children and issues which affect them.
The photographic exhibition is the culmination of a work-shopped process between the ORC and the photographers.
Every Child is My Child is the work of ten top photographers and 2 young trainees. The photographers, who come from various backgrounds, include World Press winners Jodi Bieber and Thys Dullaart, as well as Peter McKenzie, Cedric Nunn, Anna Zieminski, Chris Ledochowski, Andrew Tshabangu, Motlhalefi Mahlabe, Rafs Mayet and Ruth Motau.
The exhibition, which will run from 10 November 2000 until 7 January 2001, highlights the various issues that impact on the lives of children, and captures the quiet as well as everyday moments in children's lives. The subjects range from the birth of newborn, the after-school activities of 18-year old youth, disadvantaged children in rural areas, to technologically savvy ones in the northern suburbs of Johannesburg. The evocative exhibition allows viewers to not only see children, but also to encounter their hopes, dreams, fears and concerns.
This is the first photographic exhibition in South Africa to document children and childhood comprehensively and to highlight the myriad issues that affect children. It is also the first time that a photographic exhibition in post-apartheid South Africa is used as an information and advocacy tool for children's rights and issues.
After 7 January 2001, the exhibition will travel to exhibition spaces and community centres across the country, and will be used by the ORC and NPA to communicate children's issues to the public across the country.
When: Launch is at 13hoo on Friday, 10 November, 2000. The
