3 November 2000
Delegations from the Republic of South Africa and the Kingdom of Lesotho, led respectively by the Director-General of Foreign Affairs, Mr S. M. Pityana, and Mr S.R. Kikine, Principal Secretary of the Lesotho Ministry of Foreign Affairs, met in Pretoria today to discuss a wide range of bilateral issues.
The meeting is a follow-up to a similar meeting held in Maseru in February of this year. These Intergovernmental Liaison Committee meetings (IGLCs) date back to 1973 and are held biannually in the respective countries. It was agreed that while these meetings have served a useful purpose to address issues of mutual concern and to devise joint strategies in the diverse fields of interaction, the time has arrived to move the process forward and to enter into a new phase of interaction.
Various subcommittees that met deliberated on matters relating to Education, Transport, Health, etc. The two countries have agreed to further explore and consolidate cooperation in various areas including economic and social development, security and stability, as well as general cooperation between the two countries.
