The Presidency is hosting a workshop of government ministers and officials, international and local economists, and representatives of multilateral organisations over the coming weekend to discuss social and economic policy issues. The workshop is part of government's initiative to develop its own policies for social development and economic growth and more effective responses to the development challenges in Africa.
The workshop will be attended by some of the leading international economists and social policy specialists, including Professors Samuel Bowles, Richard Layard. The President of the World Bank, Mr James Wolfensohn and the Deputy-Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund, Mr Eduardo Aninat, have also agreed to participate. Government participants at the workshop will include Ministers and Directors-General from the key economic and social departments. The workshop will provide an opportunity for the exchange of views on issues related to economic growth and social development with international experts. It will allow policy makers to reflect on the progress government has made as well as the challenges and constraints confronting the Government. A full media briefing will be organised on Sunday after the workshop.
