27 OCTOBER 2000
Despite the outcome of the Sharm Al-Sheikh Summit, the Department of Foreign Affairs wishes to reiterate its appeal and advice that it made two weeks ago, on 12 October 2000 to those South African citizens who are intending to visit that region, in the light of the worsening and deteriorating political and security situation in the Middle East.
The Department of Foreign Affairs would like to advise the South African citizens against visiting those areas that are still engulfed by the ongoing violent confrontation, i.e. West Bank, Gaza, and some Israel Arab centres within Israel itself as well as the border areas between Israel, Lebanon and Jordan. This should be applicable until the situation has been brought back to normal and violence has been effectively brought under control.
It is further recommended that all South African citizens presently in Israel, the Palestine territories and Jordan should consider registering with the Consular Sections at the South African Embassies in Tel Aviv and Amman, whose addresses and telephone numbers are as follows.
