DEPOSITING OF SOUTH AFRICA'S INSTRUMENT OF ACCESSION TO THE UNITED NATIONS INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT ORGANISATION

Issued by: Department of Foreign Affairs

25 October 2000

On 24 October 2000, Ambassador Dumisani S Kumalo, South Africa's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, deposited South Africa's instrument of accession to the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) with the United Nations Secretary-General.

Upon depositing South Africa's instrument, Ambassador Kumalo said that "developing countries like South Africa and economies in transition face numerous challenges of an unprecedented scale in their industrial development and modernisation. Accession to UNIDO will enable South Africa to benefit from a range of programmes to strengthen our industrial capacity and the promotion of sustainable industrial development and would provide an important platform for discussion of African developmental issues".

UNIDO specialises in promoting and accelerating industrialisation in developing countries. It provides tailor-made solutions to today's industrial problems by offering a package of integrated services addressing three concerns, i.e. competitive economy, sound environment, and productive employment at a policy, institutional and enterprise level.
