SALARY INCREASES FOR PUBLIC BEARERS IN GAUTENG

19 October 2000

Gauteng's public office bearers are expected to receive salary increases with effect from April next year in line with recommendations made by the Independent Commission on the Remuneration of Public Office Bearers.

This follows the tabling of a resolution in the Gauteng Legislature by the leader of the House, Trevor Fowler today on the salary of the Gauteng Premier and a notice on increases for Members of the Provincial Legislature (MPLs) and Members of the Executive Council (MECs).

The increases will be effected in terms of the Remuneration of Public Office Bearers Act of 1998 and a presidential proclamation published in the Government Gazette on 28 September.

In line with national office bearers, newly elected members receive no salary increase, while re-elected members receive increases from 5%.

As stated in a media release by the Office of the Presidency, decisions on the remuneration of public office bearers are based on recommendations of the Independent Commission on the Remuneration of Public Office Bearers, which is a constitutional and independent body.

"The Commission's advice on the remuneration of public office bearers at all levels of government was published in the Government Gazette of 9 June 2000.

These recommendations were approved by the President on 26 September and subsequently published in the Government Gazette on 28 September as prescribed by the Remuneration of Public Office Bearers Act, 1998.

"In its report the Commission reaffirmed the values and the principles upon which it advised remuneration for public office bearers in its first report published in 1998. The Commission emphasised the importance of transparent remuneration processes and structures. It has in its recommendations sought to ensure that all such office bearers receive fair and equitable remuneration in accordance with their respective responsibilities.

"The Commission received and gave due consideration to all the submissions its received. It also evaluated evidential material concerning matters such as the levels of remuneration in the public and private sectors, the current rate of inflation, probable future trends in this respect as well as other relevant information. "The Commission was also mindful of the erosion in remuneration for public office bearers which has occurred since 1994. "
