STATEMENT FROM THE PRESIDENCY ON CRIME STATISTICS

Issued by: Office of the Presidency

19 October 2000

The Presidency is disturbed by allegations by the Institute for Security Studies that the Deputy President, Mr Jacob Zuma, misled the public about crime statistics which he released to Parliament through answering a question from the Democratic Party, and in his progress report to Parliament on October 5.

The information at the disposal of the Deputy President suggests that crime has decreased in most priority stations. A recent evaluation of police stations which had the highest incidents of serious and violent crimes has revealed that crime has already decreased by more than 10% at these stations.

The Presidency appreciates the concern of the ISS about crime levels and would like to assure the ISS and the country that the battle against crime is continuing.

In addition, we would like to refer all further inquiries about this matter to the South African Police Services.
