THE AMNESTY COMMITTEE OF THE TRC: MXENGE MATTER

13 October 2000

On Monday October 16, the Amnesty Committee of the TRC will consider an amnesty application of Chris Moseane at the Durban Christian Centre in Durban for petrol bombing the house of the late Human Rights lawyer, Griffith Mxenge in Umlazi on or about 1984. Moseane who at the time was a Vlakplaas Askari, says orders to bomb Mxenge's house and another house he cannot remember, came from the Head of Durban Security Branch, Andy Taylor. Taylor had explained to them that the houses were being used for meetings by activists.

Led by the late Gladstone Moss, an Askari himself, the group included Nicholas Dube, Spuiker Myeza, Chris Moseane and another Askari only known by the name of Mshengu, petrol-bombed the two houses. Moseane implicates Eugene De Kok who he claims sent them to Durban from Vlakplaas.

Details of the other matter sheduled to be heard in Tuesday are unavailable and will be forwarded in due course. The hearings have been scheduled to last two days.
