STATEMENT BY PRESIDENT MBEKI ON THE DETERIORATING SITUATION IN THE MIDDLE EAST

Issued by the Presidency

12 October 2000

The South African Government is gravely concerned by the extremely serious situation that has developed in the Middle East over the past 24 hours. The conflict between Israelis and Palestinians (including armed civilians on both sides) has reached a point where not only the stability and peace and security of that region are threatened, but indeed world peace and security.

The South African Government categorically condemns today's invasion of Palestinian territory and all the consequent wanton loss of life and large-scale destruction of property. This action represents one more example of the excessive and disproportionate use of force by Israel.

At the same time the Government condemns the activities of bands of armed civilians opposed to the negotiation process, both on the Israeli and the Palestinian sides.

South Africa calls for the immediate and complete cessation of all hostilities in order to create a climate conducive to the resumption of negotiations, which should lead to the resolution of all Final Status issues.

South Africa greatly appreciates and fully supports the efforts of the United Nations Secretary-General, Mr Kofi Annan, aimed at diffusing the current grave and volatile situation in the Middle East. We call on all sides of this conflict to respond positively to this initiative.
