THE DEMOCRATIC CHANGE IN YUGOSLAVIA

Issued by: Department of Foreign Affairs

9 October 2000

The Government and people of South Africa are encouraged by the manner in which the democratic change of Presidency in Yugoslavia took place despite events over the past weeks. It is another triumph for democracy and a tribute to the quality of the leadership and the people of Yugoslavia.

South Africa, together with the other democratic nations of the world applaud and trust that this will contribute towards Yugoslavia’s acceptance as a worthy member of the family of nations. At the end of the day it was the will and the spirit of the people of Yugoslavia which inspired them to take control of their own destiny: this is the essence of democracy.

The Government and people of South Africa will not only closely follow further developments with great interest, but will actively support all efforts of the people of Yugoslavia to rebuild their country and normalise their ties with the rest of the world.
