28 September 2000
Issued by the Presidency
It is my pleasure to wish the Jewish Community a very happy New Year for 5761.
Rosh Hashanah has tremendous significance for the Jewish Community. It marks the beginning of an important period of self-examination to assess whether lives are lived according to the universal principles of morality and justice. It provides a unique opportunity to review the past and take advantage of this time for spiritual renewal.
Rosh Hashanah is, for Jewish people, a time for optimism. I believe our Jewish community has every reason to feel positively about the coming year - just as I am optimistic about the future of South Africa - a country which embraces the rich heritages of all its peoples.
With every good wish for a "Shana Tova U'Gemar Hatima Tova."
