Issued by: Office of the Presidency
7 September 2000
The Presidency would like to confirm that the Cape Town residence of President Mbeki was broken into sometime between the 1st and the 4th of September 2000.
A man in his early 30s entered the residence by breaking a window at the back of the house. Police alerted the household manager that lights were switched on inside the house. Upon investigation, the household manager came across the man inside one of the bedrooms. He had consumed some food and drink. However there has not been any serious damage to property. Neither was he able to gain access to the President's private portions of the house. The secure section of the residence remained intact and untouched.
The man has been arrested and is presently in police custody awaiting further investigation and action. On being arrested the man co-operated fully with the police investigation.
