It is with a deep sense of sadness that President Mbeki learned of the passing away of one of the illustrious sons of South Africa.
President Mbeki said that Mr Harry Oppenheimer played a seminal role in the industrialisation of South Africa over a period spanning most of the 20th Century. Through his work he bequeathed to our country, not only an industrial empire spanning the width and breadth of Africa and the world, but also major legacies in the fields of education, the arts and community development.
President Mbeki also said that it was a little known fact that Mr Oppenheimer was one of the pioneers of reconciliation in this country. Ever the gentleman and a man of deep conviction and compassion, the President said that Mr Oppenheimer's life serves as an inspiring example to all South Africans.
May his soul rest in peace. President Mbeki expresses his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved Oppenheimer family.
