DEVELOPMENTS REGARDING HOSTAGES IN THE PHILIPPINES

Issued by: Department of Foreign Affairs

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has noted with concern the standoff in negotiations between Philippines government and the Abu Sayyaf Group regarding the release of the hostages including Monique and Callie Strydom.

It is the South African Government's view that neither strength nor effort should be spared by both the Philippines Government and the Abu Sayyaf Group in pursuing the only viable alternative-that of negotiations and a peaceful resolution of the crisis.

In this regard, the reported military build-up, if true, subtract rather than add to the already positive developments that occurred over the past few weeks leading to the release of a number of hostages.

However, having considered all relevant facts at our disposal, it became imperative that a review, assessment and restrategising be carried out. In this context, Minister of Foreign Affairs has advised that the Foreign Affairs support team in Tripoli and led by Deputy director-General Jerry Matsila return to South Africa immediately to participate in this process.

In the interim High Commissioner Lindiwe Mabuza will remain seized with ongoing interaction and engagement with the Philippines government while her counter-part Ambassador Ebrahim Saley will continue liaison with the Libyan government regarding any rapid developments.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Presidency will liaise with Minister Ronnie Kasrils with a view to encourage him to continue with his pre-arranged visit to the region.
