SOUTH AFRICA-IRAN JOINT COMMISSION OF COOPERATION

The Fifth session of the South Africa-Iran Joint Commission for Cooperation will be held in Pretoria from 22 to 23 August 2000 and will be hosted by the South African Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma. The Iranian delegation will be led by the Iranian Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Kamal Kharrazi.

The Joint Commission for Cooperation between South Africa and Iran was established in 1995, as a direct result of the good bilateral relations between the two countries. It is held annually, alternating between South Africa and Iran. The aim of the Joint Commission is to institutionalize the good relations that have been in existence between South Africa and Iran since official relations were re-established in 1994.

A number of bilateral agreements have been signed within the framework of the Joint Commission with regard to cooperation in the fields of Science and Technology, Trade, Taxation, Investments, Geoscience and Shipping.

The Joint Commission will discuss cooperartion on various topics ranging from the exchange of scientific and technological know-how to cooperation in the fields of rural health care and the prevention of diseases.
