Issued by Ministry of Communications
25 July 2000
Communications Minister Dr Ivy Matsepe-Casaburri on Tuesday noted with concern gross misrepresentations contained in a media release issued to the press by the Communication Workers' Union (CWU), following her meeting on Monday with union officials.
"I am appalled at the content of the press release particularly in respect of matters the union claims were agreed after the meeting," said the Dr Ivy Matsepe-Casaburri.
The following are matters the Minister has undertaken to investigate:
a.. The process followed for the retrenchments of employees.
b.. The process leading to the award and outsource of businesses to NIM, Molapo and MIG.
c.. The Transfer and retrenchment of employees to NIM, Molapo and MIG and the legality thereof.
d.. The Telkom social plan in respect of retrenchments
Dr Ivy Matsepe-Casaburri has pointed out that it was incorrect to say the meeting between her and union representatives came after a sitting staged by the national office bearers of our union on Friday 21st July at Telkom head office.
Dr Matsepe-Casaburri: "The meeting with the CWU is totally unrelated to the recent sit in. In fact, it was a follow up to the first meeting between CWU and the Minister held on the 4th July 2000."
"Another misrepresentation is to say I reached an agreement on retrenchment notices," she said. The Minister was informed of these and she promised to investigate something she is already doing.
