MEDIA STATEMENT ON THE RELEASE OF THE MALAYSIAN HOSTAGES

21 July 2000

The South African Government joins the Malaysian Government in welcoming the release of four hostages of Malaysian origin today, Friday, 21 July 2000. Today's release comes after the earlier release of two Malaysian and one German hostage.

The South African Government is encouraged by the measures taken up by both the Philippine Government and the hostage takers to expedite the speedy and peaceful resolution of the hostage crises.

However we, the South African Government, are still concerned about the safety, security and general well-being of all the remaining hostages, especially that of Callie and Monique Strydom and therefore reiterate the call for the immediate and unconditional release of all the remaining hostages. To the family, we would like to reassure you that we have intensified our efforts to ensure earliest and safe release of Monique and Callie.

The South African Government remains committed to taking all necessary steps in cooperation and consultation with affected Governments to bring about a speedy and final resolution of this matter.
