Following the resignation of Dr Mark Orkin, Head of Statistics South Africa since 1995, a recruitment process for a new chief executive is underway. In terms of the new Statistics Act (Act No 6 of 1999) the Sustistics-General will be Presidential appointment.
Until the new Statistician-General is appointed, Minister Trevor Manuel, Stats SA's responsible Minister, has appointed Dr Ros Hirshowitz will act in this capacity from the beginning of August 2000. It is expected that the permanent appointment of the Statistician-General will take place in the last quarter of the year.
