VISIT TO SOUTH AFRICA BY THE UNDER-SECRETARY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS OF KUWAIT

17 July 2000

The Under-Secretary of Foreign Affairs of the State of Kuwait, HE Khaled Al-Jarallah, arrived in South Africa this morning. The Under-Secretary is visiting South Africa from 17 - 21 July 2000 at the invitation of Deputy Minister Aziz Pahad. Deputy Minister Pahad met the Under-Secretary at Johannesburg International Airport and the two Deputy Ministers then signed a Memorandum of Understanding on the Establishment of Bilateral Consultations between South Africa and Kuwait.

Bilateral consultations to be jointly chaired by Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma and Under-Secretary Khaled Al-Jarallah will take place on Tuesday, 18 July 2000. Bilateral relations between the two states have been cultivated over a broad spectrum since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1994. The strategic importance of the State of Kuwait to South Africa is reflected in amongst others Kuwait's position as the third biggest source of crude oil for South Africa in 1999.

The Under-Secretary will during his visit pay courtesy calls on Deputy President Mr Jacob Zuma and Minister Mosiuoa Lekota. The Under-Secretary will also have the opportunity of meeting South African business people and organisations during his visit.
