OPERATION RACHEL IN MOZAMBIQUE

Issued by GCIS

17 July 2000

Operation Rachel in mozambique continues To afford the citizens of Mozambique the opportunity to rebuilt their lives after the recent floods, another joint operation in order to destroy arms cashes in Mozambique will commence on Monday 17 July 2000.

The latest operation, Rachel VI (3), comes after the water from the rains subsided and the Mozambican citizens attempted to rebuild the land through vegetation. Where they expected to find fertile ground, they only found large numbers of fire arms and ammunition in cashes. These cashes have been washed open and poses a serious threat to the stability of the Southern Region, should they fall into the hands of criminals.

On Monday 17 July 2000 members from the Special Task Force, Fire Arms Investigation Unit, Bomb Disposal Unit and Crime Intelligence will join up with their Mozambican counterparts and proceed to Maputo and Inhambane province, where the cashes have been identified. These members will spend approximately five days in Mozambique.

It is expected that the operation will further contribute to the already huge number of fire arms and ammunition destroyed in previous operations. The operation which is part of Operation Crackdown will also contribute to the reduction of illegal fire arms entering south Africa.
