STATEMENT ON EARTHQUAKE IN INDONESIA

The Department of Foreign Affairs wishes to convey its heartfelt condolences to the government and people of Indonesia on the loss of life, injuries and damage caused by the massive earthquake that occurred on the Indonesian island of Sumatra on Sunday 4 June 2000.

The thoughts of the Government and the people of South Africa are with the government and people of Indonesia during this difficult period. We are confident that the government in Indonesia will bring the situation back to normal and that the resilience and spirit of the people will rise above the ravages of this natural disaster.
