MINISTER OF TRANSPORT, DULLAH OMAR VISITS THE SITE WHERE TREASURE SUNK

23 JUNE 2000

The Minister of Transport, Dullah Omar together with the Western Cape MEC for Environmental Affairs, Mr Glen Adams, flew over the site of the wreck where the 143 731 DWT bulk carrier - Treasure sunk this morning. There is a 4 mile by 3 mile bunker fuel oil slick extending in a north westerly direction which is spreading.

The situation is serious and experts on the scene report that the vessel had six oil tanks and are in a process of determining the source of the oil coming to the surface. A pollution problem has been created and the situation is being closely monitored by the South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) and the owners of the vessel.

Of particular concern is the proximity of two Penguin colonies, on both Dassen and Robben Islands and their protection will be of the utmost concern. In addition, the Koeberg Power Station located beyond Melkbosstrand has been informed. It has taken steps to secure the plants cooling water inlet. Booming arrangements are being put in place to protect Koeberg and the penguins of Robben Island.

A general navigation warning has already been issued. The Minister is very concerned about the situation and has requested SAMSA to do everything in its power to minimise the damage. The possibility of an enquiry to look into the matter including the role of the owners and operator is being considered.
