STATEMENT ON ON THE APPOINTMENT OF THE NEW ICASA COUNCILLORS

Issued by: Department of Communications

22 JUNE 2000

CAPE TOWN - Recovering from an operation compounded by a bad cold, Communications Minister Dr Ivy Matsepe-Casaburri said she welcomes the finalisation of the process of selecting councillors for the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA).

"I wish to congratulate the new councillors. We recognise the enormous responsibilities and daunting challenges facing them. I note what appears to be an apparent lack of business experience, but I am confident that they will rise to the challenge," said Dr Matsepe-Casaburri.

Dr Matsepe-Casaburri urged the staff of ICASA and the communications industry to give the councillors all their support. "The industry needs it and the nation deserves it," she added. Dr Matsepe-Casaburri thanked the outgoing councillors for the valuable service they rendered, "especially as some of them carried their work under difficult circumstances". "I wish them well in their future endeavours, " she said.
