20 June 2000

CAPE TOWN - Communications Minister Dr Ivy Matsepe-Casaburri has welcomed the honour bestowed to the South African Post Office and the Department of Communications by the World Information Technology Services Alliance in Taipei, Taiwan.

The Information Technology Excellence Award given to South Africa at the World Congress on Information Technology 2000 was, according to Dr Matsepe-Casaburri, an honour to "the hard work by the staff of Post Office and the Department of Communications."

"That the award honours South Africa for exceptional achievements in the application of IT globally, also bears testimony to the strides made by us in the development of information and communication technologies," said Dr Casaburri.

Candidates for Information Technology Excellence Awards 2000 were nominated by IT experts from WITSA's network of 41 global IT associations, then voted on by the executives of WITSA member associations.
