19 JUNE 2000
South Africa faces an extra-ordinary severe AIDS epidemic, requiring a special response. The "Partnership Against AIDS' was launched to elicit Partnership beyond Government in a multi-sectoral response.
The Gauteng Premier has selected and appointed Council members to support him in leading this multi-sectoral response. Council members will represent society as a whole and include members from Government, Business, Unions, Faith-based organisation, People with HIV/AIDS, Youth Women, Sports, NGOs and Civil society.
The Gauteng AIDS Council will play a key Advocacy role by creating and strengthening Partnerships in order to strengthen an expanded response, involving all sectors. The Council will add value to the Gauteng AIDS Strategy and it's implementation, building on existing efforts by Provincial and Local Governments. The AIDS Council will review progress with inter-sectoral implementation regularly and link with the National AIDS Council.
It will be supported by Gauteng Government Departments and other organisations and institutions involved in the campaign against HIV/AIDS.
