STATEMENT ON THE HISTORIC SUMMIT MEETING BETWEEN ROK AND DPRK

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr N C DLamini-Zuma strongly welcomes and would like to congratulate the leaders of the Republic of Korea (ROK) and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK)on the signing of the accord to promote peace on 14 June 2000.

The historic accord is a consequence of the first-ever meeting between leaders of the two Koreas since the Second World War held in Pyongyang on 13-15 June 2000.

The South African Government would like to commend both Korean leaders for their outstanding and inspirational leadership and in having met in such a warm and friendly atmosphere.

The South African Government, which has cordial relations with both governments, is of the view that the positive results of the summit meeting between the two leaders should be built upon further in the interest of stability, peace, co-operation, economic development and reconciliation on the Korean Peninsula.
