Issued by: Department of Foreign Affairs

13 June 2000

The Secretary General of the OAU today announced the appointment of Jeremiah Nyamane Kingsley Mamabolo, Ambassador of South Africa to the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and Permanent Representative of South Africa to the Organization of African Unity, as his Special Envoy to Sierra Leone. Ambassador Mamabolo served as the First High Commissioner of democratic South Africa to the Republic of Zimbabwe from 1995 to 1999. Prior to his joining the diplomatic service, Ambassador Mamabolo served in various capacities in the ANC, including the positions of Deputy Head of Mission of the ANC office in Tanzania and Head of Mission of the ANC offices in Mozambique and Zimbabwe respectively.

The appointment of Ambassador Mamabolo, at this delicate juncture of the peace process in Sierra Leone, is intended to enhance the continued efforts which the OAU has deployed in support of regional and international efforts, aimed at ending the conflict and restoring peace, security and stability in that country.

Ambassador Mamabolo will work closely with the Government of Sierra Leone and the other countries of the sub-region, the sub-regional organization, ECOWAS, and the United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone.
