DEPUTY MINISTER OF MINERALS AND ENERGY, MS SUSAN SHABANGU LEAVES FOR LUANDA, ANGOLA

The Deputy Minister of Minerals and Energy, Ms Susan Shabangu, left for Luanda, Angola this morning to attend the 25th SADC Energy Ministers' and Senior Officials meeting at the President Meridien Hotel.

The Energy Ministers' and Officials meeting is an annual meeting with the purpose to review the progress made in the Regional Energy Sectors.

High on the agenda of the meeting is the transformation of the Technical Administrative Unit (TAU) into the Technical Unit (TU) of the Energy Commission. The meeting is also held to approve new projects in these regional sectors and to prepare a report back for the Regional Head of State Summit meeting to be held in the first week of August 2000.

The Officials' Technical Committee meeting, comprised of Director-Generals and senior officials representing the different Ministries took place from 28 - 29 May 2000 and preceded the Ministers' meeting.

Deputy Minister Shabangu will return to South Africa on Thursday, 1 June 2000.
