Issued by Gauteng Provincial Government
11 May 2000
The Democratic Party's allegations of mismanagement in the Premier's office are nothing new and do not bring any fresh evidence to unfounded and baseless allegations made by what appear to be disgruntled staff members in the office of the Premier.
When the anonymous letters appeared for the first time in 1999, the Premier spoke to all staff members and asked them to come forward with any evidence they may have so that an investigation could be instituted. The Premier also gave an assurance that no one would be victimised for exposing corruption or mismanagement.
While no one took the challenge, it emerged that a number of staff members feared that the restructuring process initiated by the Premier would affect them adversely.
All staff appointments in the Office of the Premier have been made in terms of the Public Service Act and the Public Service Regulations.
The Premier remains committed to clean government and would institute a probe if there is substance in the allegations.
