The Office on the Status of Disabled Persons: OSDP in the Office of the Presidency was instituted to advance the equality of disabled people in South Africa by co-ordinating the tasks of mainstreaming disability considerations in policies and programmes.

On 3rd November 1997, the then Deputy President TM Mbeki launched the Integrated National Disability Strategy: INDS. This is a comprehensive policy, which advocates for a paradigm shift in the approach on issues of disabled people - from the medical/tragedy model to the human rights/development model.

OSDP has formed an Inter Departmental Collaboration Committee (IDCC) to facilitate for this effort. The Committee is constituted of government nominated representatives

Role and objectives of IDCC

The official launch of the IDCC will be in two phases on the same day.

1. A workshop is scheduled for 4 May 2000, from 08:00 until 17:00 at the Sheraton Hotel, Church Street.

2. A formal event to launch the forum will take place on the same evening from 18:00 at the Sheraton Hotel on Church Street, Pretoria. Minister Essop Pahad in the Office of the Presidency will officiate. Government Ministers, Director Generals of government departments and their officials will be attending.
