TWO LAW STUDENTS ATTEMPT TO STEAL COAT OF ARMS

3 May 2000

The Presidency confirms that two first-year law students from the University of Pretoria were arrested at 3 am this morning attempting to steal the two bronze castings of the Government's Coat Of Arms unveiled by the President and Deputy President yesterday.

The security officials at the Union Buildings were immediately alerted to the early morning breach of security and the two alleged perpetrators were arrested on the spot.

The Union Buildings, which is classified as a National Keypoint, is closely monitored 24 hours a day through a discrete but tight security management system.

The two students are currently in police custody while investigations are in progress.
