In celebration of this year's Earth Day, the Minister of Environmental Affairs and Tourism Mohammed Valli Moosa, heal an Earth Day Media Luncheon to announce government's commitment to creating the country's first Eco-Villages. The ministry has partnered with Earthyear Magazine to develop a model Eco-Village for South Africa that will reflect government policy on environmental quality and protection.
Minister Moosa stated "Eco-Villages will transform informal township settlements into models of sustainability that use natural and recycled materials, energy efficient fixtures, renewable energy systems, organic vegetable gardens, and have entrepreneurial ventures employing residents."
He also said that Eco-Villages mark and exciting and innovative step in South Africa's continuing effort to address environmental and social justice issues. "The South African government is excited about announcing our commitment to this project on Earth Day 2000 in support of the global call for clean energy and sustainable development in South Africa and worldwide."
Moosa said that this initiative is a precursor to the unveiling of the White Paper on integrated pollution and waste management to be released in May. He highlighted that alongside the release of this white paper the long awaited regulation on the plastic bags will be announced. "Consultation with provinces in this regard is at an advanced stage and will be ready to make an announcement in a few weeks", he said.
The minister also called on businesses and NGOs to pledge their support to make this project a reality.
