Deputy Director-General (Multilateral) at the Department of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Abdul Minty will lead the South African government delegation to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty Sixth Review Conference in New York from 24 April to 19 May.
South Africa played a crucial role at the Treaty’s 1995 Review and Extension Conference, when the life of the NPT was extended indefinitely.
The strengthened review process of the Treaty and the "Principles and Objectives for Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament", both of which were inspired by South Africa at the 1995 Conference, have been under intensive discussion since then, and will be a focus at the forthcoming NPT Review.
