GAUTENG PREMIER WELCOMES THE ADOPTION OF THE CODE OF CONDUCT AND ETHICS BY THE PROVINCIAL LEGISLATURE

Issued by Office of the Premier Gauteng Provincial Government

20 April 2000

Gauteng Premier Mbhazima Shilowa hails today's adoption of the code of conduct and ethics by the Provincial Legislature as an important development in the campaign for transparency, accountability and clean governance.

By adopting the code of conduct and ethics, the Gauteng Provincial Legislature has answered the Premier's call for members of the legislature to declare their assets, directorships of companies and that of their spouses or partners. The Premier believes the adoption of the code of conduct and ethics would ensure that public representatives are truly accountable to the public they represent and conduct their legislature business in an open and transparent manner.

The Premier is of the view that public representatives should not use their position in the legislature to advance their own businesses or engage in lobbying for remuneration. He believes that members who engage in such business can not claim to be true representatives of the people.

The Premier appeals to all political parties in the legislature to ensure that any remunerated employment their members have outside the legislature does not take their time for the business of the legislature and constituency work.

Following on the commitment he made in February at the Legislature, the Premier has instructed all Members of the Executive Council to see to it that all HOD's and senior managers in their departments declare all their assets, business interests, directorship of companies and that of their spouses or partners.
