2 TOP POSTS FILLED AT DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL AFFAIRS & TOURISM

The Minister of Environmental Affairs and Tourism Mohammed Valli Moosa today announced that two top posts had been filled in the Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism.

Dr Patrick Matlotleng Matlou is the new deputy director general of Tourism branch and Horst Kleinschmidt is the deputy director general of Marine and Coastal Management.

Minister Moosa said that these two posts were recently created after a process of re-evaluating the core business of the Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism.

"When I became Minister the most senior Tourism post filled in the Department was that of a Director Thedirectrate Tourism has since been upgraded to a full branch of the Department with a DDG in line with the seriousness in which we take our work on building the Tourism sector in our country.

"Similarly in MCM, the most senior post was that of chief director in a directorate that employed almost half the staff of the Department and was responsible for a R2,5-billion fishing industry," he said.

• PATRICK MATLOU was Chief Director of Migration in the Department of Home Affairs. He has a Phd (Sociology) from the University of Essex, an MA from the University of Kent and BA (Political Science with Geography) from University of Ghana. Prior to joining the Department of Home Affairs in 1997 as Chief Director Admissions and Aliens Control, he was an Advisor/Consultant to the Premier and Director-General in Northern Cape and worked for UNHCR in Kenya.
• HORST KLEINSCHMIDT was the acting programme manager of the Marine and Coastal Management (MCM) chief directorate of the Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism (DEAT). He is the former executive director of Mvula Trust. After he returned to South Africa in 1991 from exile (where he was the executive director of the International Defence and Aid Fund for Southern Africa in London), he has been the executive director of Kagiso Trust, the director administration for Lawyers for Human Rights and the chairperson of Mvula Trust.
