Conference on school governance

The Minister of Education, Professor Kader Asmal, MP, has declared the month of May 2000 a period of action for election of all School Governing Bodies (SGBs) whose term of office expires in terms of provincial time frames and regulations.
To make the entire parent community aware and understand why they should participated effectively in the SGB elections, Minister Asmal will host a two-day mobilisation conference from 14-15 April 2000 at the Eskom Conference Centre in Midrand, Johannesburg.
The legislative provisions for the establishment of democratic SGBs are provided for in the South African School Act (1996) which stipulates that all schools should have democratically elected SGBs every three years. The first SGB elections took place in 1997.
Both the Minister and Director General of Education, Mr Thami Mseleku, are scheduled to address the conference on Saturday. Deliberations will focus on three main themes, namely, Practical experience of school governance: Perspectives from the Ground, Three years on - grappling with the issues of governance, Understanding the relationship between governance and Management.
