The President of Indonesia, HE Mr KH Abdurrachman Wahid and a delegation will pay a short working visit to South Africa from 8 to 10 April 2000, en route to the forthcoming South Summit scheduled for Cuba.
During the visit, President Wahid will call on President Mbeki at his official residence. It is also expected that President Wahid will meet some prominent South African business persons during the visit.
Indonesia is the third largest democracy in the world and is a country of major importance in Southeast Asia. Apart from its prominent regional profile, South Africa and Indonesia share many objectives in terms of promoting the interests of developing countries in the international arena.
The visit of President Wahid to South Africa follows on the visit earlier in March 2000 of the Indonesian Minister of Trade and Industry, Mr Yusuf Kalla who visited South Africa with a trade delegation.
South African-Indonesian bilateral relations are expanding apace. Bilateral trade in 1999 amounted to R1,919 billion.
