LAUNCH OF NATIONAL EDUCATION SERIES

The Minister of Education, Professor Kader Asmal, MP, is to preside at the launch of over the National Education Series which will be held in the Senate Room (2nd Floor Senate House, Jorissen Street) of the University of the Witwatersrand, on Monday 3 April 2000. Proceedings are scheduled to start at 16h00.

Professor Shula Marks from the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London will deliver the first lecture, entitled "The Role of Humanities in South Africa".

The national lecture series is an initiative of the Minister of Education, Professor Asmal, intended to promote critical and thought provoking debate on issues relating to higher education and its relationship to social, political, and economic issues that affect society.

It is envisaged that these quarterly lectures, which will be co-hosted by higher education institutions throughout South Africa, will be of a theoretical and practical nature, covering current and topical issues of relevance to higher education policy development and implementation.
