MINISTER OF TRANSPORT ADDRESSES THE EDUCATION COUNCIL

Issued by Department of Transport

27 March 2000

The Minister of Transport, Dullah Omar addressed the monthly meeting of Education Minister, Kader Asmal and all the nine provincial education MEC's in Pretoria today. This interaction was primarily designed to get the education department - at the highest level - directly invloved in promoting road safety education at schools and other educational institutions. Omar asked the Minister and MEC's to help in ensuring that an 'effective road safety education program gets implemented at as many sshool's as possible throughout the country, if not at all the schools.'

Omar thanked the education sector for the progress already achieved through the inter-departmental team and encouraged all education MEC's to interact with their transport colleagues at provincial level to promote road safety and save lives. "Whilst we have received very good co-operation from the education Department - National and Provincial, I want to appeal specifically for the educational material which we have developed in close co-operation with the education department to be specifically endorsed and that the material which is already available, be used. As all of us can appreciate, all materials are not been distributed together. They are being distributed in tandem with the unfolding process of Outcome Based Education programs", Omar said.

In response Minister Asmal welcomed Omar's gesture and assured Educations' co-operation in promotion road safety at schools.
