STATE OF DISASTER DECLARED IN AREAS IN THE FREE STATE PROVINCE

24 MARCH 2000

During the night of the 19th March 2000 heavy rain fell in the Qwaqwa region especially the area adjoining Lesotho. This resulted in water levels rising rapidly. Most houses were submerged under water and some were ultimately washed away. This resulted in the whole area of Qwaqwa being flooded. This situation calls for emergency measures to be taken.

Consequently, Minister FS Mufamadi, Minister for Provincial and Local Government, today declared a state of disaster in the magisterial districts of Phuthaditjhaba Transitional Local Council, Qwaqwa Rural Council and Maluti Transitional Rural Council in the Free State Province in terms of the Civil Protection Act, 1977, as amended.
