As part of his TIRISANO campaign and implementation plan, The Minister of Education Prof. Kader Asmal notes the valuable role that teachers play in maximising learning in different contexts, and building the education and training system. This on-line service will be a channel to vocalise the voices of teachers and emphasise the importance of teachers in the education system.
Minister Asmal requested the service after learning about a similar programme in Denmark, and will launch his Internet presence on Wednesday 22 March at 2pm. The primary target audience is teachers, and discussion is expected to focus on critical education issues facing teachers and schools.
The chatline will be accessible to anyone with an Internet connection, and operates through standard web browsers such as Internet Explorer or Netscape. SchoolNet and the Department of Education chose M-Web as technology partner for the service because of its expertise in building online communities.
Minister Asmal will be appearing live on a regular basis and will respond to issues based on the theme for the discussion. Identified themes include teachers and OBE, teachers' conditions of service, and training requirements for teachers. Minister Asmal envisages that all MECs would follow suit should this service be successful.
