RESUMPTION OF TALKS BETWEEN ISRAEL AND PALESTINE

The Department of Foreign Affairs welcomes the resumption of the Peace Process negotiations between Israel and Palestine. Given South Africa’s long standing support for the Middle East Peace Process, the Department of Foreign Affairs commends the initiative and commitment of President Arafat and Prime Minister Barak and their teams for their readiness to make sacrifices in the interests of peace.

In this regard, the Department of Foreign Affairs wishes them well in their efforts to work out the details of peaceful co-existence which is a pre-condition for development and prosperity in the region.

The Department of Foreign Affairs reiterates South Africa’s support for the Middle East peace process and its conviction that the objective of lasting peace can only be attained through a process of negotiations in good faith between equal partners.
