NATIONAL FLOOD RELIEF FUND ESTABLISHED

Issued by: GCIS

9 March 2000

The recent flood disasters in South Africa and our neighbouring countries have prompted a unity of effort both nationally and internationally by concerned individuals, countries and organisations wanting to give a helping hand to affected communities. Many people have pledged to make contributions, which will enable affected communities to access such basic necessities such as food, clothes, blankets, alternative emergency accommodation, etc.

The Inter-ministerial Committee on Disaster Management has noted the need for the co-ordination of these efforts so that relief aid received, is distributed equitably to the affected areas that need them most. The need has, therefore, arisen to establish a National Flood Relief Fund, which will enable prospective contributors to have a point of contact.

The Minister for Provincial and Local Government, Sydney Mufamadi, after consultation with President Mbeki and the Minister of Welfare and Population Development, Dr Zola Skweyiya, decided to constitute a Board of Trustees to administer this fund. The following eminent persons have agreed to serve on the Board:

Dr Aggrey Klaaste ( Chairperson), Mr Chris Liebenberg, Mr Sakhi Macozoma, Rev Charity Majiza, Mr Andrew Makenete, Ms Barbara Masekela, Ngwenyama N.C.M. Mayisha II, Dr Ntatho Motlana, Mr Ahmed Omar, Ms Adelaide Tambo, Mr Bertie Van Zyl.

The Board will meet for the first time on Monday, 13th March 2000, at the Rosebank Hotel, Johannesburg.

Minister Mufamadi believes that the establishment of this fund will go a long way in enhancing disaster management co-ordination and put us in a position to assist affected communities more quickly and efficiently. The South African Government is overwhelmed by gestures of goodwill made by individuals, organisations as well as the international community who are touched by the plight of the victims of the current floods.
