Johannesburg – Communications Minister Dr Ivy Matsepe-Casaburri today met with the newly appointed members of the SABC board, and briefed them on a number of issues that they will have to tackle during their tenure.
The appointment of the new board was made last month by President Thabo Mbeki who is particularly happy with the board which clearly has the depth and breadth of experience and ability to tackle issues and challenges of broadcasting in a new and fast-changing technological environment.
Among the issues that the board was briefed on were the role of the public broadcaster, financing the public broadcaster, the challenges of globalisation, and restructuring of the SABC.
The Minister also used the opportunity to induct the new board, reflecting her desire for the board to have a full understanding of processes and requirements so that they will not be hindered in their work by a lack of understanding of responsibilities, duties and obligations. They were briefed on governance issues, as well as the role of legislation and executive government.
