VISIT BY MR LAMPREIA, MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS OF BRAZIL TO SOUTH AFRICA

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Federative Republic of Brazil, Mr Luiz Felipe Lampreia, will pay an official visit to South Africa from 1 to 3 March 2000 at the invitation of the South African Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Minister Lampreia will be accompanied by Ambassador Jose Vincente Pinentel, Director-General of the Department of Africa at the Ministry of External Relations, Secretary Victor Luiz Prado, Economic Advisor in the Ministers’ Cabinet and Secretary Maria Christiana Alves, Division of Regional Integration at the Ministry of External Affairs.

Minister Lampreia and his delegation will be holding discussions with President Thabo Mbeki, Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, Minister Alec Erwin and Deputy Minister Aziz Pahad in Cape Town.

Discussions will centre around the strengthening of mechanisms for bilateral consultation between South Africa and Brazil and the focussed expanding of economic ties. An exchange of views on the current situation in Africa as well as strategies for joint actions on global issues such as disarmament and nuclear non-proliferation, crime, South South Cooperation, reform of the United Nations, the World Conference on Racism and human rights will also be discussed.

Minister Zuma and Minister Lampreia will sign a Technical Cooperation Agreement between South Africa and Brazil providing for cooperation in the fields of Agriculture, Education, Energy, Industry, Environment and Natural Resources, Mining, Micro and Small Enterprises, Health, Transport and Communication, Privatisation, Shipping and Tourism.

The visit by Minister Lampreia will serve to further strengthen the existing good relations between SA and Brazil.
