MINISTER ASMAL LASHES OUT AT DISRUPTIONS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF THE NORTH

Issued by Department of Education

22 February 2000

Professor Kader Asmal, MP, Minister of Education, today (22 February) lashed out at the disruption of the academic programme at the University of the North. In a media statement issued in Cape Town this afternoon, the Minister said he is in regular contact with Mr George Negota, Chairperson of the Council of the University of the North, regarding the developments at the University.

Minister Asmal said: "it is the responsibility of the acting vice-chancellor and management to take appropriate measures to enable the University to fulfill its mandate to begin teaching and to conduct research as laid down in the University calendar".

The Government does not afford any group the right to disrupt the university by threats or use of violence. Minister Asmal said: "it is up the University to take appropriate disciplinary action against the perpetrators of such anti-social activities. If non-students are involved, the matter has to be handed over to the South African Police Service for their speedy attention".

The Minister hopes that the university will act to ensure that it is not held to ransom by a small group of students. The Minister indicated that SASCO office should remain open provided that the organisation conducts legitimate and lawful activities on campus.

Finally, Minister Asmal expressed alarm at the closure of the Qwaqwa campus of the University last week. The Minister re-asserted the right of the acting vice-chancellor to act in accordance with the law to ensure that Qwaqwa campus is re-opened without delay. (End)
